Celebrate Earth Day in Ascot Hills Park

Saturday April 24, 2021

 

Why:

  • Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22 since 1970
    • it is a time we remember how fragile our planet and regulations needed to protect clean air, water, land, biodiversity
    • it is time we take action – do good turns for our environment

 

What is planned for Ascot Hills Park?

  • Four events – do any or all that fit
  • Celebrate the whole week, any day of the week, or Saturday April 24

 

Event 1:  Plant Milkweed for Monarchs in your garden

  • North East Trees in partnership with the Ascot Hills Park Advisory Board (PAB) and One Tree Planted, offers Free Milkweed plants
    • give away on Saturday, April 24 by reservation only
    • limited supply

    • reservations begin Wednesday, April 14 at 10:00 am. Reservations are now FULL!

 

Event 2:  Be a Citizen Scientist in our BioBlitz

  • Observations between Mon, Apri. 19 – Sun, Apr. 25
  • Use iNaturalist to upload you photos/observations of plants and animals
    • Easy steps to participating in this BioBlitz are:
        • Download the iNaturalist app,
        • Create a free account,
        • Search projects for ‘Ascot Hills Park Earth Day BioBlitz 2021‘, and
        • Start snapping photos as you explore the park!
  • Stay on approved Roads and Trails

 

Event 3:  Do a Good Turn – Litter Pick up

  • Participate on Saturday, April 24, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
  • Use your own gloves and collection bag or
  • Visit the PAB booth at west end of gravel parking lot to Pick up a Clean-up Kit (sterilized 1-qt ZipLock bags containing a plant-based heavy-duty trash bag, two pairs of gloves, and one instruction sheet containing a map of park’s trails and where to deposit the litter at the end).
  • Stay on approved Roads and Trails
  • Participants eligible for a free bird watching guidebook.

 

Event 4:  Fly a Kite

  • an Independent activity for families or individuals on Saturday April 24 only
  • Bring your own Kite
  • Suggested time Noon to 4 pm (best time for afternoon breeze)
    • Stay on approved Roads and Trails
  • Pack out all that you bring to the park
    • leave no litter behind
  • Maintain Social Distancing
    • wear face covering
    • family groups up to 6 persons maximum (dogs not counted in limit)
    • keep groups at least 6 ft. apart
